Insurgent: Box Office Splash

The second installment in the Divergent movie franchise, Insurgent, wins this weekend's box office, wrestling its way to number one, but misses the Divergent mark from last year.

At this time last year, Divergent earned $54,607,747. Insurgent has so far earned $52,263,680 (from Box Office Mojo), so it narrowly missed last year's franchise record. This is a huge success for an opening weekend, but not even close to other YA novel adaptations. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, for example, earned around $161.1 million dollars on opening weekend, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets earned around $88 million dollars on its opening weekend. So, although widely successful, it hasn't been catching fire like some movies yet. (No pun intended) Surprisingly, this movie departs from the book in a lot of different areas, but as a standalone movie, it was great. Obviously due to a bigger budget, we get to explore other factions' living conditions and the CGI effects are much better, but it departs from the book in so many ways, so maybe that somehow contributed to the loss to make a mark. Fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Eragon, Avatar: The Last Airbender, etc. might feel sorry for Divergent book fans now.
